Kevlar, a synthetic fiber renowned for its exceptional strength, surpasses steel by approximately five times in durability. In tire manufacturing, Kevlar finds application in two primary ways: either as a substitute for the steel coils that traditionally form a tire's edges (known as beads), or as a sub-tread, serving as a protective layer nestled between the external rubber and the internal fabric casing that constitutes a tire's structure.

Tires featuring Kevlar beads boast a lighter weight, reducing each tire's mass by approximately 2 ounces (56 grams). Unlike conventional tires, these variants offer the added convenience of being foldable. While tires with Kevlar-infused casings or sidewalls may carry a slightly increased weight and provide a marginally firmer ride, they offer the distinct advantage of enhanced puncture resistance. This attribute stems from Kevlar's ability to deflect sharp objects such as glass, safeguarding the tire tube against punctures. As a result, these tires often provide extended durability, withstanding the rigors of rough terrain and minimizing the occurrence of flats for extended periods, sometimes up to a year or more.
